Older People’s Housing Champions Network present at UKAFA meeting in November

We were all delighted that Tony Watts, Chair of SWFoA and housing champion for the South West, was invited to present to the UKAFA November meeting on the role and plans for the Older People’s Housing Champions Network.

Tony identified a number of key facts that need to be addressed if housing and ageing is to be treated as a serious issue. This included

  •      the rising numbers of older people needing greater housing choices in later life (giving better choices can help to release family sized homes)
  •    too many older people are living in fuel poverty and cannot afford to heat their homes
  •    many older people need adaptations and repairs and that poorly maintained , un adapted homes can put lives at risk and lead to unnecessary hospitalization and delays to returning home

He also set out how the network would pool resources to

  •   share what is working on the ground
  •  raise the profile of older people’s housing locally and nationally
  •    concentrate on building housing for ALL ages
  •    argue that housing must be seen as a significant  in the debate about health and social care
